The Goodwin Sands created a sheltered stretch of sea to the coast, known as The Downs. Sailing ships anchored here to wait for the wind to change before they could continue their journey. For centuries untold numbers of ships ran aground and sank on the sands. The sands are a diverse marine habitat, including a colony of grey seals.
