Sound Mirror Sculpture

Following a bequest by long-term resident Bill Elliott, Deal Town Council commissioned Deal artist Michael Bennett to produce this sculpture which comprises a sound mirror on one side and a map of the coast on the other.

Consisting of a 1.78m (6 feet) high structure with a sound mirror on one side, it is oriented towards the sea and French coast, much like the original sound mirrors built last century.

The rear has a map showing centuries of shipwrecks on the Goodwin Sands.

The mirror enables those standing at the focus to hear amplified sounds of the sea and have any sound they make to be reflected back magnified. The focal point is 1.8 metres (6 feet) directly in front of the centre of the dish.
