A bronze statue of a crouching miner which looks toward the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery.
‘The Waiting Miner’ is by Harry Phillips (1911–1976), it was commissioned by the Central Electricity Generating Board and unveiled on the 8th June 1966 outside the Richborough power station. In 1997 the plant closed and the sculpture was moved to Dover seafront, the site of the former National Coal Board and National Union of Mineworkers offices.
In 2010, following a campaign by former miners and their families, it was moved to its current location where it looks toward the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery. At that time a plaque was added to ‘Men who lost their lives during the life of the Kent coalfield 1896-1989’.
