This memorial commemorates the 16 airmen who were killed in the First World War during operations from the airfield which operated on Hawksdown.
During World War 1, Hawksdown was set up as a Royal Naval Air Service Aerodrome to defend shipping in the English Channel, it was joined by the Royal Flying Corps and duties expanded to bombing and intercepting enemy aircraft. It became an RAF station when the RNAS and RFC were merged and was disbanded in 1919.
In World War 2, it was reopened as RAF Walmer for radar tracking and jamming but not for aircraft; it closed in 1945.
