This memorial indicates the area where many historians believe a force led by Julius Caesar landed in 55BCE.
In 55BCE, Julius Caesar led what is generally regarded as a reconnaissance mission to Britain, following many years of trading with the nation and his conquest of Gaul.
Caesar made a further landing in Britain the following year, bringing a bigger force and making more military progress but again withdrawing after a few weeks.
Caesar made no conquests in Britain, but his enthroning of Mandubracius marked the beginnings of a system of client kingdoms there, thus bringing the island into Rome’s sphere of political influence.
Diplomatic and trading links developed further over the next century, opening up the possibility of permanent conquest, which was finally taken up by Claudius in 43AD.
